It is almost unbelievable. Almost. But we know how the Devil works.

Meriam Ibrahim, along with her
husband Daniel Wani (a US citizen), was arrested at Khartoum airport
while trying to board a plane. Daniel had made it clear that once Meriam
was free, he was taking his family away from Sudan. However, 24 hours
after her release, they were stopped just short of freedom from a
tyrannical Sudan.

Although Meriam’s conviction was overturned and the family was allowed
to travel, 40-50 officials from Sudan’s National Intelligence and
Security Service (NISS) arrested Meriam and her husband. And no one knew
why.

“I’m very concerned. When people do not respect the court, they might
do anything,” Meriam’s lawyer said. According to her lawyer, Elshareef
Ali Mohammed, they are not even allowed legal representation. They came
to arrest Meriam. Daniel refused to leave her side. So they arrested the
entire family. When Meriam’s lawyer tried to speak to them, he was
brushed off. No mention of Meriam’s previous convictions was mentioned,
leaving everyone to wonder why she was arrested.

According to religious freedom group Hardwired, who have campaigned
for Meriam’s release, the NISS does not operate through the courts if
it claims to be working on a matter of national security. Previously
they have detained people indefinitely and is notorious for taking
prisoners to secret ‘ghost houses’ where they are tortured.

The NISS have been described as ‘Agents of Fear’ in a report by
human rights campaigners Amnesty which highlights a catalogue of abuse
they are alleged to have inflicted on prisoners.

A day later, we find out why she was re-arrested. Sudan is questioning
her travel documents. Reports state that if they find her documents
fraudulent, she could face 7 years in prison. The US State Department is
promising that they have received assurances from Sudan that the family
is safe.

Meriam had been falsely convicted of apostasy and adultery and
sentenced to 100 lashes and death by hanging. While in prison, she gave
birth to her second child. Over 1 million people worldwide had rallied,
petitioned, and protested to gain her release and stand against the
religious persecution.

On June 23, the world celebrated as Meriam and her two children were
released from prison. The world applauded a judge that was willing to
stand up for what was right, and not bow to Islamic pressure. Yet on
June 24, the world watches Sudan renig on its promises, again.

Now, Meriam and her family have been released and are seeking refuge
in the US Embassy in Khartoum. However, they are not free to leave the
country. Despite the fact that the US Ambassador ok’d the documents and they were issued by a legitmate embassy, they aren’t being expected.  So, the US is getting documentation together to get Meriam and her family to the States.  So now it’s just a matter of time. Right?

No.  In a sick twist of fate, the “family” of Meriam is preparing to take her to court to prove that she was indeed Muslim.  They claim that they have documentation proving that she was born Muslim.  Should they succeed, the government will be forced to carry out the death sentence, as well as the lashings.

This is just ridiculous.  This woman cannot catch a break.

And there’s more to come.  Meriam, in an interview, talked about how she believes her new baby girl to be disabled.  She recounts how she had chains on her legs.  So, when giving birth, she couldn’t properly open her legs.  Meriam, a doctor, says that she won’t know the full extent of the disability until Maya is older.  Meriam says that Maya’s legs may need support in order to work.  According to Meriam, the chains are the cause of her baby’s disability.

Oh how hard the Devil is working! We must work harder.

And Meriam is not the only one.  Another woman, Faiza Abdallah is facing the same situation. https://www.facebook.com/savefaizaabdallah

I urge you to write Sudan and express your outrage over these women’s situations.

The ACLJ has a petition for people to sign, urging the US government to get this family into the United States. Go here to sign. You can also go here to get information on Sudanese embassy contact information and representative contact information.
