Life Changing Words

Words matter.  The Bible talks about the tongue and words quite a bit.  It even states that the tongue has the power of life and death. Our words are extremely important. "Rash words" can also be translated "words of the reckless."  These types of words are like swords. They pierce.  We have all had someone who has pierced us with words. It is extremely painful and sometimes the sting will never go away, even after forgiveness.

Words can also be healing. Wise words bring healing.  What are wise words?  It's not necessarily advice.  Many times we think of wisdom in the form of advice.  Wise words are any words that are spoken with wisdom.  In order to bring healing, these wise words are administered with wisdom. Sometimes, that wisdom is knowing what NOT to say, or knowing WHEN to say it.  A person who has just lost everything to a tornado doesn't want to hear the words "I know what you're feeling."  They need to hear words like "You must be heartbroken.  How can I help you?"  You don't tell a woman at her husband's funeral "I know a dating site where you can find someone."  Although it might be an honest attempt to help her feel better, it is definitely NOT the right time. This woman needs time to grieve.  A better attempt at helping to heal would be to say "I am here when you need me," (and meaning it).

Words of healing are hard to come by.  Rash words are everywhere.  They are night and day different.  Those who have been at the receiving end of either type of these words will tell you they have one thing in common:  both sets of words are life changing.

If you want to take it further, you can do a Words of Wisdom journal.  Simply make categories (you can add a category whenever you want) and put the Bible verses into the appropriate categories.  For instance, one category might be "Money."  Every time a verse has to do with money, you write it under the category.  As time goes on, you will have a journal of wisdom from the Bible organized in an easy to find way.
