We all have to admit that there are times in our lives when we are like the mom in ET. Totally oblivious to the alien in our house. There is so much going on in our lives that we miss the completely obvious. For those in the country that are teleworking with kids not at school (or the family is quarantined), your life may be very overwhelming. We are in uncharted waters in regards to our daily lives right now and it can be overwhelming. That sense of frustration, that feeling of distress, or that overwhelmingness of life can make us miss the most obvious thing: God’s love.

In times of busyness or distress, we often lose sight of God’s love, yet it is exactly in these times that God often shows his love the most. It doesn’t matter how dark it gets, we cannot be separated from God’s love.

Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword? As it is written, “For your sake we are being killed all the day long; we are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered.” No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Romans 8:35-39 ESV

Not only is God’s love there for us, but he acts upon it. He doesn’t just leave us to figure it out on our own, he provides for us.

Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.

Isaiah 41:10 ESV

God is there to strengthen us, to help us, and to see us through. Often, when we are overwhelmed or stressed, we forget this. We usually don’t feel his presence. But the Bible tells us that we just need to seek him. Come to him with thankfulness for what he has already done and then give your requests to him. Let him know what is going on and that you need him to move in your life.

Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Philippians 4:6-7 ESV

When you go to God and ask him for his help, he gives you a spirit of peace. Things around you might still be crazy, but you will have peace. That peace will help refocus you, it will help you prioritize, and it will help you not miss out on ET in your house.

What is God doing in your life right now? What can you be thankful for?

What are you fearful of? What is distressing you?

When you are getting overwhelmed, take time to pray. Be still, calm your mind, and tell God what you are thankful for. Then seek his counsel and ask your requests.
