This is hilarious!!  I had to use this for our first week of the New Year!  How often do we wait to do something, only to not do it, or not enjoy it, because we waited too long?  That is what the New Year’s resolution is all about, right?!  It is that time every year where we try to overcome the procrastination that has plagued us.  We resolve that we will take action and get it done this year.  Most of the time, our resolutions are focused on the physical realm: finances, dieting, physical improvements, reducing stress, etc..  However, we can make resolutions in the spiritual realm as well.  God has a plan for each one of us, and we can resolve ourselves to sticking to his plan.

For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.

Ephesians 2:10 ESV

Did you catch that?  God has a plan for you and he prepared it beforehand.  That means that he doesn’t just ask you to do something on a whim.  He has predetermined his plan for you.  You don’t have to forge your own path.  You just have to walk in the path that God has set before you.

The heart of man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps.

Proverbs 16:9 ESV

However, some of us can probably say that we have missed opportunities that God has put before us.  Maybe we have not followed where God asked us to go.  We may even have guilt that we have ruined God’s plan.  We worry that we are that couple in the gondola who waited too long and now they can’t be a part of the journey. Let me assure you, you have not ruined God’s plan.  It is never too late to join God on the path he has made for you.  It is true, you may have missed out completely on that one thing, but you can join God on plenty of other things.  And that one thing you didn’t do?  God took care of it in another way.  God is more powerful than anything.  He can handle disobedience.

I know that you can do all things, and that no purpose of yours can be thwarted.

Job 42:2 ESV

And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.

Philippians 1:6 ESV

So how do you know what it is that God wants you to do?  First, if you have any unresolved guilt from missed opportunities, take it to God.  If you have not repented for any disobedience, repent.  Then, ask God to show you how you can follow him.  If you have an inkling of what he wants, ask him to confirm it for you. Lastly, the best part!  You do not have to wait to start following God!  While you are waiting on an answer, you can still follow him.  Start attending church regularly.  Get into God’s word.  Make a daily habit of praying.  Decide upon ways you can show love to others.  There is so much you can do!

God has a plan and a journey for each of us.  No two people’s journey are the same!  However, there are things that he calls each of us to do. He tells us to love him above all else.  Then, love other people.  So how can you do that today?  Then, how can you do that tomorrow?  Just keep doing it and see where God leads you!

The Lord will fulfill his purpose for me; your steadfast love, O Lord, endures forever. Do not forsake the work of your hands.

Pslam 138:8 ESV

Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children. And walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.

Ephesians 5:1-2 ESV

And let our people learn to devote themselves to good works, so as to help cases of urgent need, and not be unfruitful.

Titus 3:14 ESV

So as to walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him, bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God.

Colossians 1:10 ESV

  1. Take some time to pray and ask the Holy Spirit to direct you to the path God has for you.
  2. Write down some things you can start on right away.
