How funny is this?! I have never been the dog in this meme, but I have definitely been the person the dog is looking at!!

This meme reminded me of how God may be looking at us. Our spiritual fuel tank is getting low and we need to stop and get refueled. Yet, we keep passing by the fueling station and wondering why we don’t feel close to God. We wonder where God is yet we aren’t reaching out to him. He is telling us to refuel: to read our Bible and talk with him. Yet we keep driving down our path, completely ignoring opportunities to spend with him.

You see, when we don’t spend time with God in prayer and in the Bible, our spiritual fuel will get low. When we get low, we don’t feel close to God, decisions become harder, we can’t see when we are being attacked by Satan, and we often become confused about God’s will in our life. If we are working in ministry, we feel like things are becoming difficult, we lose our drive and become apathetic. Our fuel light is blinking but we aren’t stopping for fuel.

So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.

Romans 10:17

“I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinedresser. Every branch in me that does not bear fruit he takes away, and every branch that does bear fruit he prunes, that it may bear more fruit. Already you are clean because of the word that I have spoken to you. Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.

John 15:1-5

So how do we stop for fuel? We read our Bible consistently and we spend time in prayer. And just like a car, if you only put in a little gas, you are only going to go a small distance. That’s where the consistency becomes important.

If you are always pumping fuel in, you will always have gas in your tank.

And just like if you drive hard, you need more fuel, if you are being spiritually attacked, you will also need more fuel. Satan will be trying to fog your windows, you may have a few high speed chases, and parts may start to wear out. Hard times will mean you need to be spending more time with the Lord.

Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.

1 Peter 5:8

Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.

James 4:8

So if you are feeling like you aren’t close with the Lord, maybe decisions are becoming difficult and you can’t see which way to go, or you are being constantly attacked, evaluate how much time you are spending with the Lord.

  1. So how much time are you spending with the Lord? Bible reading and in prayer.
  2. Are you feeling low on fuel?
  3. What can you do to increase your time in prayer and reading the Bible?
